Weißensee Jewish Cemetery

Despite the persistent rain this week, I took a walk this afternoon in Weißensee Cemetery, Germany's oldest and Europe's largest Jewish cemetery. Approximately 100, 000 jews are buries here. The majority of grave stones I saw dated the deceased around the turn of the century.

An abridged Wikipedia entry:

The grave plots are arranged into 120 different sections, each with their own geometric shape and the lavish way in which the more wealthy figures in it chose to fashion their mausolea using the latest art nouveau designs is immediately noticeable.

The outskirts of the plot is predominantly reserved for the upper and middle classes while the centre is reserved for the less well off, in areas which are harder to reach, often covered in foliage.

After WWII , Jews from all parts of Berlin continued to use the cemetery until 1955; from 1955 until reunification only the small Jewish community in East Berlin used it.

During the DDR, the cemetery was neglected and many of the graves were left unattended (because most of the community were murdered during, or had fled from, the Holocaust) and became overgrown with weeds.

It has been estimated by the cemetery officials that the cost to fully repair the damage caused by years of neglect is 40 million €. In the year of its 125th opening anniversary, appeals to local government were made to increase funding, so that a bid can be made to reach the UNESCO world heritage list.

As I understand it, it's a custom in Judaism to place a rock on a grave stone as a means to show respect to a friend. I saw lots of rocks and very few flowers. The amazing thing is that graves that are over a century old have newly placed rocks on them.

It was difficult to capture the sheer enormity of the cemetery. Hopefully these pics give an idea.

I was really struck though that despite decay (or probably because of it) the grounds were quite green and beautiful.

Wacko Jacko

I went on another tour of Berlin, this time more of a general tour of the central, though technically 'East' area. On a wimsical note, the guide pointed out for us the window of the hotel Adlon where Michael Jackson famously dangled his baby back in 2002. The yellow arrow is courtesy of yours truly.

Final Destruction of GDR Buildings

By this time next week the GDR buildings (which have been slowly destroyed over 5+ years) will be gone. In its place will be a reconstructed Prussian Palace, damaged duiring WWII, that the Soviets did not rebuild (for obvious reasons) during their occupation. While I understand Berlin's desire to move on, I can't help but have sympathy for the East Berliners who grew up with this community 'hang-out' that had cinemas and even bowling alleys. It also feels more than a bit like sweeping a secret under the rug.

One thing for certain, the reconstructed palace will most likely fit in a bit more harmoniously with its immediate surroundings.

Greg Plasters

... and plasters and plasters.

Broach

I don't have much of a disposable income while here, but I couldn't resist this little piece. The 'ruby' stones are quite dark, often appearing black.

Saturday Afternoon Walk - around Museum Island

Some of the things I saw:

A lone goose chillin on the (I'm assuming) freezing cold river.

Some random graffiti.

A rather lush window.

Some smaller Christmas Markets already open.

And the larger ones getting set-up for the big launch.

Some giant maple leaves.

Daydreams of owning a dog as cool as t+c's Timber. What? How did he get in here?!

A random building on the island complete with bullet holes. The blackened stone at the top is left over from WWII as well.

A tree shaking in the wind.

And some more birds at dusk.

Ad

This is the single most annoying ad I have seen so far. I am accosted by it everyday in the U-bahn. Argh!

Sarah and Dan

This week my cousin Sarah was in town from Wednesday-early Saturday. On Wednesday we got together for dinner and beer and I got to meet her Aussie beau Dan.

On Friday afternoon I joined them for a tour called The Third Reich. Even though Sarah and Dan raved, I was sceptical that it would be worth the money, but it totally was! I'm definitely going to do the other tours offered by NewBerlin.

Shorter Days

I guess the only good thing about shorter darker days in the Fall...

...is pretty earlier sunsets.

Storm Abrewin'?

Something in the air shifted this evening, and my slight headache agrees, Berlin is in for some rain.

Brüsseler Straße

The street that the apartment is on. The pics were taken from the balcony at the front (2 tall floors up).

Best Subway Tiles So Far

More Red Vines

This time by Mauer Park.

Good Eye Greg

I think all of the apartment reno's have gotten to Greg. He spotted this last week on a ceiling while we were out at openings. Can you spot the pop bottle?

Peripheral Space Update

Just a note that I've added a couple more art related posts to my peripheral space blog.

Sheep Cat Porcupine?

I found this napkin (tissue?) a few days on the stairs of my apartment building. It was (obviously) unused, the folding was from me. I refound it today in my coat pocket.

Metro #1

A splice of my time on the Metro (top of the U6 line).

Berliners Get Down - Office Party Style

Greg and I cam upon this while going to some openings on Saturday night. It was amazing. You can't actually see the people very well, but get an idea of their dance style by the silhouettes. The best part is right at the end: "Oh no, that lady's looking." That's what you get when you throw an office party at street level.

Strange Yellow Men

Tonight I cut through Alexanderplatz and there was some random promo event happening (complete with sercurity guards) for "Ich-bin-mag" (I am mag?)... no idea. Hey, I actually walked over to see what it was all about, so I guess it worked on me.

Susy and Anders

Susy and Anders stayed here for a week before taking off to Paris and Lisbon. This pic and the video were taken this past Wednesday, their last night here.

"Hopefully you'll edit this or it will be the most boring video in the world." Well, Susy, I did not. Enjoy!
